A new Traineeship programme designed by the BBC to equip 5,000 unemployed young people with employability and digital skills has been launched. The BBC Make it Digital programme is aimed at unemployed people aged 16-24 who don’t already have a full level 3 qualification, the equivalent of two A Levels.
The eight week programme will be delivered by a network of training providers across the country, including Greater Manchester’s largest training organisation, The Skills Company. The first group will start on 17 August at The Skills Company’s central Manchester location, with further courses due to start in October and in the new year at centres across Greater Manchester.
The Traineeship has been designed by experts from the BBC Academy, drawing on the BBC’s existing training courses in digital, leadership and personal development. It was announced by BBC Director-General Tony Hall at the start of this year’s BBC Make it Digital initiative, which aims to inspire a new generation to get creative with coding, programming and digital technology, and help address the current skills shortage in the UK’s technology sector.
Recruits to the Traineeship programme, which includes a three week work placement, will cover a range of essential work skills including:
- Improving employability
- How to help a business to attract more customers online
- Building and maintaining a basic web page for a business
- Developing a basic social media campaign
- How to create an online CV
Jayne Worthington, Managing Director of The Skills Company said:
“We’re delighted to have been selected to deliver this exciting new project. We’ve been running Traineeship programmes very successfully for two years now, and 92% of those who complete our programmes have moved directly into an Apprenticeship or a job.”
“Although this programme is not specifically aimed at getting people into jobs in the BBC or the media, research has shown that employability and digital skills are what employers today are looking for, and they are in short supply across UK industry. The BBC’s expertise in these areas will ensure that the people who enrol on this Traineeship will have a great launching pad to progress in their careers.”
