Ebrahim is Provost at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) where he has responsibility for the University's campus in Burnley, Lancashire.  Prior to this, Ebrahim was the Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience and Transformation) at the University of Bolton and also the Director of the TIRI Interdisciplinary Research Centre at the University.  

He serves as the Deputy Portfolio Holder for Economic Strategy and Internationalisation at the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) reporting to Sir Richard Leese.    

Ebrahim has served as a local Councillor in Bolton since 2002.  He has held the Children's Services Executive Cabinet portfolio with responsibility for schools, safeguarding children and children in care and is currently the Executive Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Resources with responsibility for Council finance, the budget planning process, performance management, human resources and Bolton's Economic Strategy.  He is also the former Vice-Chair of the Bolton NHS Primary Care Trust and a former Non-Executive Director at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

He has a national profile which includes appointment as a Commissioner on the Commisison on Integration and Cohesion, a Peer Member for the Local Government Association and an Independent Expert Adviser on local government for the Audit Commission.
