Breaking down the barriers to employment

As Managing Director of GC Employment, I’m incredibly proud of all the hard work that the team demonstrates on a daily basis. However, one thing which make me especially proud is just how much we do as an organisation to support vulnerable individuals who are battling with mental health problems – and who are struggling to find work as a result.

At GC Employment, we deliver a wealth of programmes to support some of the hardest-to-reach people across Greater Manchester and beyond. We help to break down any barriers that are preventing our clients from finding work – and this includes helping them to overcome anxiety, depression and other complex mental health needs.

I’d like to take this opportunity to call out some of the work we do across our programmes to give people with mental ill-health the best possible chance to secure employment and build a bright future for themselves.

Recovery Works

Our charity, Recovery Works, supports people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction to enter employment, training and education and improve their mental wellbeing.

The people who engage with Recovery Works are among the most vulnerable in society, and it’s often their mental health problems which are fuelling their addictions. We work intensively with them to help build their confidence and motivation. We also provide them with practical tips to help them manage stress and anxiety, so they’re mentally well enough to find work and integrate seamlessly back into society.

Salford Health Works

Another programme which supports people who are facing challenges is Salford Health Works – an integrated employability and health and wellbeing service.

Many people referred to the programme have financial worries, which often lead to poor mental health. We work with individuals to support them with their personal circumstances and improve their financial situation – resulting in a positive uplift in their mental health.

Working Well (Work and Health Programme)

Recently recognised in the press, Working Well is helping to improve the mental wellbeing of Greater Manchester residents. We work with Pathways to provide mental health sessions for our clients, before assisting them with their job search and getting them ready for the world of work. And, it’s feedback like this which proves just how vital these kinds of programmes are when it comes to creating a happy, healthy workforce:

“Not having work was making me have suicidal thoughts, but the Working Well (Work and Health Programme) has truly saved my life.” – Karl

“I’m thrilled to be back in work doing a job that I love. There’s been a massive improvement to my life and circumstances since getting help the Growth Company.” – Jenny

“I am pleased to say that I am happily back in work. The skills support and confidence that I gained while attending the Growth Company have all contributed to getting my new position as an Administrator.” – Audrey

Positive Directions

Over in Liverpool, Positive Directions is providing people with a ride range of integrated mental health support.

The programme offers bespoke mental health and wellbeing support to help clients find and keep a job. This includes help with confidence, motivation and the resilience, enabling individuals to better handle stress and challenges both in a personal and professional capacity.

So far, Positive Directions has helped over 800 people on their journey into employment, with over 150 individuals being successfully placed into work.

Mental health training for staff

Here at the Growth Company, we also offer mental health awareness training to our staff. The training puts our employees in a better position to recognise and act on the warning signs of mental ill-health in both their clients and colleagues.

Proud to do what we do

As Mental Health Awareness Week 2019 draws to an end, it makes me very pleased to reflect on all the work we do across the Group to support individuals who are facing their own challenges around mental health.

I look forward to seeing our existing programmes go from strength and strength, and I’m delighted to see so many of our clients overcoming their problems and going on to achieve great things in the workplace.
