My experience as a mentor: Naomi Timperley

To celebrate National Mentoring Day and tomorrow’s national launch of the ‘Be the Business’ mentoring programme, we’re putting the spotlight on one of our GC Business Growth Hub mentors, Naomi Timperley.

Co-founder of Tech North Advocates – which was set up to support the North's tech start-ups and high-growth businesses in finding new investment and talent – Naomi has numerous strings to her bow. She’s also an honorary industry fellow at the University of Salford, a TEDx speaker and part of the Maserati 100 – a list of entrepreneurs who help the business leaders of the future.

Her vast experience combined with her infectious passion for success meant that she was someone who we were keen to work with. Naomi’s mentoring journey with the GC Business Growth Hub began five years ago when we first launched our mentoring programme. During that time, she’s worked with some inspirational people with some amazing business ideas. And, Naomi says she’s ‘learned something from every single one’.

One person who particularly stands out to Naomi is Amy Varle – a young woman who is passionate about solutions to homelessness. Amy won a Fellowship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, which saw her spend time in America to research best practice for homelessness resolution. Thanks to her studies, Amy has since been able to help over 100 socially disadvantaged people. It’s these kinds of stories that make Naomi’s job as a mentor so worthwhile.

It’s clear that Naomi finds mentoring rewarding, but she’s also keen to shout about the benefits of mentoring programmes for mentees. Speaking of what budding entrepreneurs can gain from such initiatives, Naomi said: “I think for a lot of people I’ve mentored it’s been a confidence thing, and a mentor can help you to believe in yourself and to believe in your idea. I think it’s also about having someone who can challenge you when perhaps other people wouldn’t. This can help you identify problems and issues that you perhaps wouldn’t see in your business day-to-day”.
