Experts have recently warned that the UK’s care system is ‘at breaking point’, after a new study found that the number of over-85s needing 24-hour care is set to double.
The study, which was conducted by Newcastle University and the London School of Economics and Political Science, also showed that the elderly is also the fastest growing population in the country.
Many elderly people will go on to develop numerous long-term health conditions, such as dementia and diabetes – which in turn will result in complex care requirements. This will put increased demand on the health and social care industry, and goes some way in highlighting the importance of encouraging more young people to consider a career in the sector.
Without fresh talent joining the industry, the skills gap is only going to get worse. Here at the Growth Company Education & Skills, we’re always on the look-out for passionate young people who want to make a real difference to the future of health and social care.
We place our apprentices with some fantastic employers within the industry to train and develop the caring, compassionate and dedicated talent that is so desperately needed to ensure our elderly get the high standards of care they deserve.
Just one employer that we work with is CASA, and we have a number of apprentices there who are already making a huge difference to the lives of the people they help to look after. One of the great things about apprenticeships is that students learn on the job, meaning they’re making an impact right from the beginning.
As much as we need to encourage young people to work in health and social care, it’s important to note that our apprenticeships are great for anyone who is considering a change of career. You’ll gain real experience and qualifications, and be supported every step of the way – even if you have no previous experience.
Apprenticeships are going to be pivotal in bridging the current skills gap, and ensuring that the growing elderly population can be taken care of. If you’re interested in finding out more about our health and social care apprenticeships, get in touch with our team.
