Buynex Ltd is a UK-based SME developing a B2B digital marketplace for packaging and consumables.

The platform simplifies procurement for SMEs, particularly within food service, hospitality and e-commerce sectors where packaging is a core operational requirement.

As Buynex entered a key growth phase, the business needed to validate its go-to-market strategy and develop a better understanding of SME buying behaviour. The company was also exploring opportunities to engage with structured innovation programmes such as Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) but faced a number of barriers, including limited trading history, the need for a clearer innovation challenge, and understanding eligibility requirements.
Additionally, the business needed to strengthen its intellectual property (IP) strategy and ensure robust cyber security for its digital platform.

Buynex worked with Innovate UK Business Growth to access a coordinated programme of tailored support to address these challenges.

The support included:

  • Early advisory support and feedback on KTP readiness, including trading history, project definition and eligibility requirements.
  • Introductions to innovation ecosystem partners and KTP advisers.
  • Access to the National Enquiries Gateway for targeted market intelligence.
  • Delivery of sector-specific research focused on SME procurement behaviour.
  • Support to secure and complete an IPO-funded IP Audit.
  • Facilitation of a Secure Innovation Security Review to identify and manage key security risks.
  • Guidance on funding routes and investment opportunities.
  • Support for talent and capability development, including exploration of internship pathways.

As a result of the support, Buynex secured £259,000 in investment and created two new jobs. The business has also strengthened its IP strategy, improved cyber resilience, and gained an enhanced understanding of customer behaviour and market dynamics.

The support also increased the company's readiness to engage with future innovation programmes, including Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, positioning Buynex for continued growth and innovation.

Andrew McNair, Founder, said: "The support we've received from Innovate UK Business Growth has been extremely valuable during a pivotal stage of Buynex's development. The introductions, specialist advice and access to targeted market intelligence have helped us refine our strategy, strengthen our intellectual property position, improve our cyber resilience, and better understand our customers. The programme has also helped us build the foundations for future innovation and growth, and we look forward to continuing that journey."
