At the start of this year our Sustainability Team carried out the GC Travel and Homeworking Survey to gain a better understanding of our carbon emissions and the actions we need to take across GC to reduce them.

The anonymous survey was designed to give the team more detailed data that we need to measure our progress – this includes things like understanding colleague commuting, business travel and homeworking.

848 colleagues completed the survey and these are some of the findings.

Commuting

48% of colleagues use sustainable modes of transport for commuting.

Of the 848 colleagues who completed the survey, these were the most common methods of commuting:

  • Car Driver: 46%
    • Petrol: 54%
    • Diesel: 37%
    • Electric/ Hybrid: 9%
  • Car passenger/taxi: ~2%
  • Train: 21%
  • Tram: 12%
  • Bus: 8%
  • Walk most or all of the way: 6%
  • Cycle: <1%

The average commute for GC colleagues is 15 miles.

CO₂ Emissions (kg) for each method for an average 15 mile commute:

  • Bus: 2.5kg
  • Petrol car: 3.9kg
  • Diesel car: 4.1kg
  • Hybrid car: 2.9kg
  • Electric car: 1.3kg
  • Train: 0.9kg
